Fishing remains good on Lake Conroe
Reel Report by Capt. David Dillman
Southeast Texas has received its fair share of rain the past couple of weeks.
The good news is that the two area lakes, Livingston and Conroe, are at pool, which is their full level, or near pool. Water release from Lake Livingston remains low, while Lake Conroe has yet to spill over the dam.
I reached out to Conroe fishing guide Collin Edwards to see how his start to summer fishing has gone. Here's what he had to say:
"Fishing remains good on Lake Conroe as several species continue their seasonal transitions heading into summer.
"Catfish are still finishing up their spawn, with many fish still carrying eggs. Anglers are finding success targeting shallow rip rap, bulkheads and spawning areas as the spawn begins to wind down.
"Hybrid striped bass are transitioning into their summertime pattern and have started moving toward deeper structure. Productive areas include deeper points, ledges and breaks in 17 to 20 feet of water. Anglers are finding fish grouped up on bait and feeding aggressively when schools are located.
"Bluegill are wrapping up their spawn in shallow protected coves. Look for bedding colonies in 3 to 6 feet of water, especially around bulkheads, boat docks and other protected shoreline habitat.
"Blue catfish have moved into shallower water as they prepare for their annual spawn. Targeting shallow structure, rip rap and areas near spawning habitat has been producing quality fish.
"Largemouth bass have largely transitioned into a post-spawn pattern. Many fish have moved offshore and are being caught on brush piles and structure in 16 to 24 feet of water. However, anglers can still find bass relating to docks, shoreline cover and shallow structure during low-light periods and around active baitfish.
"Water temperatures continue to rise, and fishing activity remains strong across much of the lake as fish settle into their early summer patterns."
