Lake Conroe Fishing Steady
Reel Report by Capt. David Dillman
Here’s some news for those of you who spend time fishing our offshore waters. The commercial gulf shrimp season will reopen 30 minutes after sunset Wednesday.
Federal water from 9 nautical miles to 200 nautical miles will open at the same time as our state waters. Fishing behind a freshly culled shrimp boat can make for some exciting action.
Speaking of exciting action, I received a report from professional fishing guide Collin Edwards of Lake Conroe Fishing Adventures. Here’s what he has to say.
“Fishing on Lake Conroe has remained steady through June and into early July. Morning water temperatures have been in the low- to mid-80s before climbing into the upper-80s and even 90 degrees on the main lake during sunny afternoons. Recent rains and consistent winds have helped maintain oxygen levels across the lake, keeping fish active despite the summer heat.
“Hybrid striped bass are holding on main-lake points and ledges in 12 to 24 feet of water.
“Channel catfish are being caught along bulkheads, riprap and brush piles in 12 to 22 feet of water. Anglers targeting trophy blue catfish are finding success on ledges and creek channels in 12 to 24 feet of water.
“Bluegill and bream are still holding around shoreline bedding colonies, docks and other shallow-water structure, providing consistent action.
“As summer temperatures continue to rise, expect fish activity to slow during the afternoon as water temperatures increase and oxygen levels begin to decline. The best bite will continue to be early in the morning, with anglers focusing on deeper structure as the day warms.”
